Pralay Mondal | Axis Bank: Veteran banker Pralay Mondal quits Axis Bank to pursue other opportunities

MUMBAI:Veteran banker Pralay Mondal has quit Axis Bank as its retail head nearly a year after joining the private lender in April 2019. Mondal will step down in September this year to pursue a leadership role at a private-equity backed financial lender. ET could not independently verify the name of his future employer.

Mondal was hired as part of Axis Bank chief Amitabh Chaudhry’s effort to strengthen the top deck of the bank after Chaudhry took over in January 2019.

Axis Bank confirmed the development adding that it would soon begin the process of identifying a replacement, which would most likely be an internal candidate.

“Pralay Mondal has made significant contributions to the retail banking business during his tenure at the bank and we thank him and wish him the very best in his new endeavours,” said Rajesh Dahiya, Executive Director at the private lender.

Axis Bank has a strong leadership bench and succession is well underway, added Dahiya.

“It’s an unanticipated but unavoidable development owing to some personal compulsions,” said Mondal without elaborating on his next move. “Axis is a strong franchise.”

Before Axis Bank, Mondal was the head of the commercial business banking and rural banking and senior group president of retail and business banking at Yes Bank since September 2012.

Before joining Yes Bank, he was the head of retail assets and credit cards at HDFC Bank. He has around 30 years of experience across retail banking, business banking, products and technology. Mondal is an engineer from IIT Kharagpur and a management graduate from IIM Calcutta.
