JD(U)’s Harivansh to be Rajya Sabha deputy chairman pick | India News

NEW DELHI: The NDA is likely to repeat Janata Dal (United) Member of Parliament Harivansh as candidate for the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman’s post, elections for which, if needed, will be held on September 14.
Home minister Amit Shah held a strategy meet with Union ministers Thawar Chand Gehlot, Pralhad Joshi and party floor managers on Tuesday. Harivansh, who was elected as deputy chairman in 2018, recently completed his six-year Rajya Sabha tenure. However, he has already been re-elected to the upper House and can be nominated as candidate for the post again.
Biennial polls for 61 seats to Rajya Sabha were held recently. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have reached the 113-mark, just nine short of full majority as per the current numbers.
Party sources said the NDA has the required numbers as several regional parties have pledged support to the alliance candidate. There is a strong possibility that JD(U)’s Harivansh will be elected with consensus, as opposition has not shown any inclination to field its candidate so far.
