NEW DELHI: With 9,195 fatalities till Sunday, India is the ninth worst-hit nation in terms of Covid-19 deaths while the highest spike of 11,929 cases took the tally to over 3.20 lakh of which over half have recovered from the disease.
According to the Union health ministry data, the country recorded 311 new deaths in the 24-hour period till Sunday morning while the recovery rate rose to above 50 per cent with 1,62,378 patients cured so far, leaving 1,49,348 cases active.

  • Union home minister Amit Shah has called a meeting of all political parties of Delhi on Monday to discuss the Covid-19 situation in the national capital amid a recent spurt in coronavirus cases, an official said. BJP, Congress, AAP and BSP have been invited for the meeting.
  • Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant stressed on the need for adequate testing, accompanied by aggressive containment by the states to manage Covid-19 crisis. “Some States/Cities think that they can manage COVID-19 crisis without adequate testing. This is not possible. Examples of Kerala/Karnataka/Korea demonstrates that testing -tracing- treatment accompanied by aggressive containment & public adherence to masks & distancing is key,” Kant said in a tweet.
  • A day after allowing the use of antiviral drug remdesivir and off-label application of tocilizumab and convalescent plasma in moderate cases of Covid-19, the Union health ministry said the “use of these therapies is based on limited available evidence at present”.
  • The peak stage of Covid-19 pandemic in India has been delayed by the eight-week lockdown along with strengthened public health measures and it may now arrive around mid-November during which there could be a paucity of isolation and ICU beds, and ventilators, according to a study.
  • The study conducted by researchers from an Operations Research Group constituted by ICMR said the lockdown shifted the peak of the pandemic by an estimated 34 to 76 days and helped bring down the number of infections by 69 to 97 per cent, thereby allowing time for the healthcare system to shore up resources and infrastructure.
  • A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court raising concern over the safety of healthcare workers, including nurses and paramedical staffs, and has sought directions to authorities to provide proper protection kits to those working in Covid-19 wards or in close proximity of patients suspected to be infected with the deadly virus.
  • The nation’s largest lender State Bank of India has temporarily closed three branches — two in Mumbai and one in adjoining Thane — after eight staff tested positive for Covid-19, bank employees said.


  • Delhi: With Covid-19 cases increasing alarmingly, Amit Shah announced that its testing will be doubled in Delhi in the next two days and subsequently increased by three times. The Covid-19 case tally has reached nearly 39,000 and the virus has claimed more than 1,200 lives in the capital.
  • Uttarakhand: Uttarakhand reported the death of a 61-year-old novel coronavirus patient, taking the toll to 24, while the state’s virus count climbed to 1,816 with 31 more people testing positive for the infection.
  • Nagaland: Five more persons tested positive for Covid-19 in Nagaland, taking the total number of infections in the state to 168.
  • Meghalaya: The Meghalaya government has extended the night curfew till June 22 to contain the coronavirus outbreak, officials said. Restrictions on inter-state movement of people will also continue, exempting only those having permission for medical purposes.
  • J&K: Three Covid-19 positive patients died in Jammu and Kashmir, taking the number of coronavirus-related fatalities to 59. While one death took place in Jammu region, two patients passed away in Kashmir valley.
  • Andhra Pradesh: The rapid pace of coronavirus spread in Andhra Pradesh continued as the state crossed the 6,000 cases mark to reach 6,152 with the single largest spike of 294 in a day.
  • Mizoram: Five more persons have tested positive for Covid-19 in Mizoram, taking the state’s tally to 112.
  • Karnataka: Karnataka medical education minister K Sudhakar said there was no question of reimposition of the lockdown amid speculation that it would be done.
  • UP: A total of 499 new cases of Covid-19 reported in Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of active cases to 4,948.
  • Assam: The novel coronavirus cases in Assam inched towards the 4,000 mark with 43 more people testing positive for the infection.
  • Odisha: Odisha registered the death of another Covid-19 patient, taking the death toll to 11, while the state reported 186 fresh cases. The total number of cases in the state rose to 3,909.
  • Tripura: Forty-five more people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Tripura, taking the tally in the northeastern state to 1,046.
  • Puducherry: Eighteen more Covid-19 cases in Puducherry took the tally of infections to 194, while fatalities remained at four with no fresh deaths being reported.
  • Kerala: Kerala reported a marginal dip in fresh Covid-19 cases with 54 people, including three health workers, testing positive, taking the tally to 2,460.
  • Rajasthan: The state registered 131 fresh Covid-19 cases, taking the tally to 12,532, while the death toll climbed to 286 with four new fatalities.
  • West Bengal: Twelve people in West Bengal succumbed to Covid-19, taking the death toll to 463.
  • Punjab: Roads and markets in most parts of Punjab wore a deserted look with the state government imposing stricter lockdown restrictions on weekends. Inter-district movement was barred except for people with e-passes.
  • Tamil Nadu: Thirty eight more people have succumbed to the deadly coronavirus in Tamil Nadu pushing the number of fatalities to 435 in the state, where 1,974 people were infected by the virus.
  • Gujarat: The state recorded 511 Covid-19 positive cases, taking the state tally to 23,590.


  • The novel coronavirus has killed at least 430,289 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December. At least 7,794,930 cases of coronavirus have been registered in 196 countries and territories.
  • The United States is the worst-hit country with 115,436 deaths from 2,074,526 cases. At least 556,606 people have been declared recovered.
  • China reported its highest daily number of new coronavirus cases in months with parts of Beijing still under lockdown, offering a second wave warning. Of the 57 new cases, 36 were domestic infections in the capital, where a large wholesale food market at the centre of the outbreak has been closed and nearby housing estates put under lockdown.
  • Pakistan has recorded its highest number of coronavirus cases in a single day with 6,825 new patients, taking the tally to 1,39,230, while more than 80 people lost their lives in the last 24 hours.
  • Iran reported over 100 new deaths in a single day from the novel coronavirus, for the first time in two months. Iran announced 107 Covid-19 fatalities in the past 24 hours, raising the overall toll to 8,837.
  • Nepal has registered 425 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the nationwide Covid-19 tally to 5,760,
  • Singapore reported 407 new Covid-19 cases, the majority of them being foreign workers living in dormitories, taking the country’s total count to 40,604.
